Sint MTS3000 Restan - residual voltage measurement
MTS3000-Restan: System for automatic residual stress detection by drilling method
How does the method work?
MTS3000-Restan is Automatic system for residual stress detection by drilling method, developed and patented by the company SINT Technology. It is a semi-destructive mechanical relaxation method that works by drilling a small hole in the centre of a three-grid strain gauge rose. The process is carried out by successively drilling the hole, where at each step information on the strain released by the material under test is obtained and used to calculate the residual stress. The drilling method is based on standardized worldwide by ASTM E837, the latest edition of which dates from 2020.
The standard method defines:
- layout and number of drilling steps,
- dimensions (diameter, length and width of the grid) of the strain gauge.
- coefficients used to calculate residual stresses based on the deformations obtained.
Measuring chain
Thanks to many years of experience in laboratory and field measurements using the boring method, SINT Technology has developed and optimized an AUTOMATIC system for the determination of residual stresses by the boring method.
The measurement chain of the MTS3000-Restan system consists of:
- drilling unit with micrometric displacement controlled by a special stepper motor, including a suitable drilling device (based on an air turbine or electric motor) for the material under test and a special microscope for centring the device with the centre of the strain gauge rosette.
- control unit for controlling the system, in particular the drilling speed, the activation of the drilling motor and the implementation of zero depth determination by electrical contact;
- control software (RSM) designed for measurement setup, strain collection and measurement in drilled holes;
- Evaluating software (EVAL) to calculate the residual stress using different methods (ASTM E837, integral, differential and HDM) based on the obtained deformations, including corrections and uncertainty evaluation.
Key features of the system
The MTS3000-Restan performs the drilling process fully automatically. It ensures high repeatability and prevents any induced residual stress by optimizing the drilling parameters.
